How to treat and prevent closet mold in humid Mirdif villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’ve just found black spots in the corners of their bedroom closet, which is on the interior wall of our villa in Mirdif. It’s the room we run the AC in the most, and I’m worried the humidity is getting trapped in there. What’s the best way to treat this and prevent it from coming back, especially with another humid season coming up?

Black spots in a closet on an interior wall are a classic sign of condensation-related mould, common in Mirdif villas due to high humidity and constant AC use. The AC cools the room's air, but the interior wall and closet space can be warmer, causing moisture in the air to condense on the cooler surfaces inside the closet, creating the perfect damp environment for mould.

For treatment, first address the immediate issue. Wear a mask and gloves. Clean the visible mould on hard surfaces with a detergent solution or a mix of vinegar and water. Discard any mouldy porous items like cardboard boxes or paper. Simply painting over it will not work; the mould will bleed through.

Prevention is about controlling humidity and air flow. The closet is likely a dead air space. Leave closet doors ajar a few inches to allow conditioned air to circulate inside. Avoid over-packing clothes, as this restricts airflow. Consider installing a small louvered door or ventilation grilles to promote circulation. For the room itself, ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly—a clogged drain pipe can elevate indoor humidity. Using a standalone dehumidifier in the room during the most humid periods can also help measurably reduce ambient moisture levels.

Given the coughing symptoms and the fact it's a recurring issue in a child's room, a professional inspection is wise to identify the specific mould type and its root cause. They can perform a humidity mapping of the wall to check for hidden condensation issues and provide a targeted remediation plan to ensure it doesn't return next season.
