How to permanently stop black mold in high humidity closet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that keeps coming back in our master bedroom closet. It's on the back wall, and even after I clean it with bleach, it reappears within a couple of weeks. We live in a villa in Springs, and this is the closet on the outside wall. What's the permanent solution to stop this from happening, especially with the high humidity here?

The mold returning indicates a persistent moisture source that bleach cannot address. In a villa in Springs, this is almost certainly due to condensation from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the humid exterior wall, a common issue here.

First, improve air circulation inside the closet. Leave the door open regularly, and if possible, install a small battery-operated ventilation fan or a wired dehumidifier rod designed for closets. This reduces the stagnant, humid air where mold thrives.

The permanent fix requires addressing the wall's temperature. The cold interior surface of that outside wall is causing water vapor to condense. A professional inspection can identify if additional insulation can be added to the wall cavity to raise its surface temperature above the dew point, preventing condensation entirely.

For your children's health, a certified inspection and surface sampling by a microbiology lab is advised to confirm the mold type and its concentration. This provides a definitive diagnosis and a targeted remediation plan, as recurrent visible growth often indicates a more extensive problem within the wall assembly.
