AC mold smell: DIY vinegar fix or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this damp, earthy smell every time it turns on, and it’s been getting worse over the last three weeks. I can even see a few small black spots around the vent in the master bedroom. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray, or is it time to call in a professional mold inspection service in Dubai?

The smell and visible spots indicate active mold growth in your AC system, which is common in Dubai's humid climate where condensation constantly feeds mold in ducts and evaporator coils. A vinegar spray is a temporary surface fix for the vent cover but won't reach the mold growing deep inside the unit or ductwork, which is likely the source of the worsening smell.

For a systemic issue like this, a professional inspection is advised. They use borescopes to inspect inside the ducts and coils and often recommend air or surface sampling to identify the mold species. This is important as some types common in AC systems, like Aspergillus, can cause more significant respiratory irritation than others. The inspection will map the full extent of the contamination.

The high humidity and year-round AC use in the UAE create a perfect environment for this problem. DIY attempts often just spread spores or miss the primary growth site. A proper remediation for an AC system involves containment, HEPA vacuuming of ducts, and specialized coil cleaning to address the root cause, not just the visible symptoms at the vent.
