How to safely remove black mold in humid bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Triangle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, and I finally found the source: black mold is growing in the grout between the tiles right behind the toilet. It's a small bathroom with no window, and I'm worried the AC ventilation isn't strong enough to dry it out properly. What's the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back in our humid climate?

For a small area of black mold on bathroom grout, start with a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Spray it generously on the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Vinegar is effective on many common household molds and is less harsh than bleach, which often only removes the surface color without killing the root.

In a windowless bathroom, the core issue is persistent humidity from showers and condensation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee to remove standing water. Consider a small, standalone dehumidifier for a significant, measurable reduction in ambient moisture, which is the primary driver of mold growth in Dubai's climate.

If the mold returns quickly, covers an area larger than a square foot, or you experience persistent musty odors or health symptoms, the growth may be more extensive behind the tiles or in the wall cavity. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and, if necessary, surface sampling for a lab analysis is the only way to identify the full extent and species for a targeted remediation plan.
