What's the best product to kill bathroom shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It's the ensuite in our Marina apartment and it doesn't have a window, so it never fully dries out. What's the most effective product I can buy locally to kill this for good?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is a persistent issue due to the high humidity and lack of ventilation, especially in windowless ensuite bathrooms. The most effective locally available products are chlorine-based cleaners, often sold as "mould remover" or "bleach spray" in supermarkets like Carrefour or ACE Hardware. Look for a product with at least 5% sodium hypochlorite; apply it directly to the grout, let it sit for 10-15 minutes without drying, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly.
For long-term control, killing the mold is only half the solution. You must address the moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down the wet tiles and glass walls with a squeegee immediately after use. In a sealed Marina apartment, a small dehumidifier can make a significant difference in pulling excess moisture from the air. If the black spots return quickly after a thorough cleaning or if the area affected is larger than one square foot, the growth may be deeper within the grout or behind the tiles. Surface cleaning won't solve a subsurface problem. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly air testing is advised to assess the full extent. Companies with their own microbiology labs can identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol beyond DIY methods. |
