How to permanently remove black mold from a cold wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, fuzzy patches spreading along the back wall of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah. The wall is cold to the touch and it's definitely been worse since the humidity spiked over the last month. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good and should I be calling a professional company or is this a DIY job?

The cold wall and humidity spike point to a classic case of condensation-driven mold growth, very common in Dubai. The wall's cold surface, likely from an AC duct or external chill, meets humid air, creating the perfect environment for mold. Permanent removal requires addressing both the visible growth and this underlying moisture issue.

For a small, contained area (under 1 square meter), a thorough DIY approach can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then follow with a disinfectant like diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold cleaner. Completely dry the area with a fan. Crucially, you must eliminate the condensation. Improve air circulation in the closet, ensure the AC isn't set excessively low, and consider using a moisture absorber. A dehumidifier in the room can significantly reduce the ambient humidity that fuels the problem.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or returns after cleaning, the issue is systemic and requires professional assessment. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and applying professional-grade antimicrobials. The key is a proper diagnosis to identify the exact moisture source, which could be a deeper building envelope issue. Companies with their own microbiology lab can identify the species and provide a post-remediation verification test, which is the only way to confirm the mold has been effectively removed for good. For peace of mind in a bedroom, a professional assessment is often the wisest first step.
