How to remove black mold from villa and protect my child?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has this weird black stuff growing along the bottom of the bedroom wall where the wardrobe is. It started appearing after that really humid spell a few weeks back, and now my youngest has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a cough that just won't clear. I'm really worried it's the mold making her sick. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I call a professional company or is there a DIY solution I can try first?

The black substance is likely mold, a common issue in Dubai villas where interior walls meet cold AC ducts, creating condensation. This is especially problematic during humid spells. Your child's symptoms are a significant indicator that professional assessment is needed.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), a careful DIY approach can be attempted. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a mix of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Ensure the room is well-ventilated and keep your child away until the area is completely dry. However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or is behind the wardrobe, DIY cleaning will only address the surface and it will return.

Given the recurring humidity, the presence of symptoms, and the location (indicating a potential hidden moisture source), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the root cause—often a small leak, capillary rise from the foundation, or condensation from an AC line—and perform remediation that includes containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the villa. The most effective, permanent solution requires fixing the moisture problem first, then removing the contaminated materials if necessary, and treating the area with professional-grade antimicrobials. For health safety and a guaranteed result, seeking a certified mold assessment is the most prudent course of action.
