Urgent: Black mold in shower or can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots over the last few weeks, and the room always smells damp no matter how much I run the exhaust fan. I'm in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm worried the humidity is making it spread. How urgent is it to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a cleaning product from the supermarket?

Black mold in showers is common due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation, but it should not be ignored. The damp smell indicates persistent moisture, which means the issue is likely behind the tiles or in the wall cavity, not just on the surface.

For a small, surface-level area (less than one square foot), you can attempt cleaning with a dedicated bathroom mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and baking soda. Always wear gloves, a mask, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. Scrub the grout thoroughly.

However, your description of a constant damp odor and an older building in a coastal area like Jumeirah suggests the mold may have penetrated deeper. Surface cleaning will remove the visible spots but won't address the root moisture problem, so it will return quickly. In this case, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the source of the moisture—whether it's a small leak, inadequate sealing, or insufficient ventilation. They can assess if remediation behind the tiles is necessary to prevent structural damage and potential health impacts from prolonged spore exposure.
