Black mold in Dubai AC: professional cost and DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been blowing out a damp, earthy smell for the past month, and we just discovered patches of black dust around the grille. I'm worried it's black mold, especially with my allergies acting up. What's the realistic ballpark cost for a professional inspection and cleanup for a standard villa room here, and is it absolutely necessary to hire someone or can I tackle this myself with a bleach solution?

A professional inspection for a single room typically involves a visual assessment and surface sampling to identify the mould species, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation plan. The cost for this service can vary, so it's best to request a detailed assessment from a certified provider. A full cleanup cost is highly dependent on the extent of the contamination within the ductwork and the AC unit itself, which cannot be determined without that initial inspection.

Given the damp smell and your allergic reactions, a DIY bleach clean is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, can damage AC components, and its fumes mixed with mould spores can worsen air quality. In Dubai's high humidity, the underlying moisture problem causing the mould is almost certainly still present, so it will likely return quickly. The "black dust" could be Stachybotrys (toxic black mould) or more common Cladosporium; only lab analysis can confirm the type and associated health risks.

For a situation with persistent odour and health symptoms, hiring a professional is strongly advised. They will not only remove the visible growth but also identify and address the source of moisture—often condensation due to the extreme temperature differential between our outdoor climate and indoor AC settings. Proper remediation includes containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence, steps that are difficult to execute safely and effectively without training and equipment.
