Mold under bedroom AC in Dubai - DIY or contact management?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little bit for a few weeks and I finally pulled back the corner of the carpet near the wall today. There's a patch of black and green fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate on the concrete underneath. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I contact my building management in Dubai Marina immediately?

Contact your building management immediately. In Dubai Marina, where high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold, this is a structural issue they are responsible for addressing. The leak is likely from the AC drain line or condensate pan, which requires a technician to fix. Do not attempt to repair the AC unit yourself.
For the mold itself, a small patch on concrete can often be addressed with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the door and opening a window if possible. Scrub the concrete with a stiff brush and a solution of detergent and water. After cleaning, a thorough drying with fans is critical to prevent regrowth. However, the carpet and underlay will likely need professional cleaning or replacement, as mold roots deep within fibers are nearly impossible to fully remove yourself. Given the size and the fact it's hidden under carpet, a professional inspection is wise to ensure it hasn't spread into the wall cavity. The primary step is stopping the moisture source, which is your building's duty. Inform them in writing, as they are obligated under typical tenancy agreements to maintain the property's habitability. |
