Safest way to clean black mold with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot, and I just found patches of black mold growing behind the toilet in our master bathroom. It’s been really humid lately in our Jumeirah villa, and I think the lack of a window is making it worse. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without using harsh chemicals that could affect my family?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai's high humidity, especially in windowless en-suites where condensation from AC units provides constant moisture. For a small patch behind the toilet, you can clean it safely with household items.

Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. For tougher growth, a paste of baking soda and water can be effective. Spray or apply the solution, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush and rinse thoroughly. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin.

Crucially, the goal is to control the humidity that caused it. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and floors with a squeegee. Consider a small desiccant dehumidifier for a windowless bathroom, as this can measurably reduce the ambient moisture that mold needs to grow.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue may be deeper within the walls or under the tiles. In these cases, and especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is advised to identify the species and the full extent of the moisture source.
