Is this bathroom mold serious or can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, and there's a weird speckled pattern growing on the ceiling in the corner. I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago, but after all the recent humidity, it's definitely gotten worse. I'm in an older building in Bur Dubai and I'm not sure if this is just surface stuff I can scrub away with bleach or if it's a bigger issue that needs a professional. What's the best way to tell if this is a serious mold problem that requires an expert?

The black grout and speckled ceiling growth are classic signs of mold, which is extremely common in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and condensation from showering. The recent weather has likely accelerated its growth.
For the grout, surface-level mold can often be scrubbed away with a dedicated bathroom cleaner, but it will likely return if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. The speckled pattern on the ceiling is more concerning, as it suggests the growth may be penetrating the porous material. The key factor is the extent of the problem. If the affected area is smaller than a square meter, you may manage it yourself with proper cleaning and improving ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for 30 minutes after every shower. However, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, has a musty odor, or the ceiling shows signs of water staining or softening, the issue is likely behind the surface. In older Bur Dubai buildings, leaks from adjacent apartments or within the wall cavities are a frequent source of persistent mold. In these cases, a professional inspection is advised to identify the hidden moisture source. A science-driven assessment, often involving moisture meters and sometimes air or surface sampling, can determine if the mold is confined to the surface or has become a larger infestation requiring remediation. |
