How to safely remove black mold near kids' play area?« Back to Previous Page

Our family room in our Mirdif villa has had a constant damp smell since the weather turned more humid a couple of months ago. I just moved the large sofa to clean behind it and found a huge patch of black mold spreading up the wall from the skirting board, and my two young kids are always playing on that carpet. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself without putting my family's health at risk from the spores?

The safest approach is to have a professional inspection first to determine the mold species and extent. In Dubai's high humidity, what's visible on the wall is often just a fraction of the problem, as it can grow inside wall cavities. For your kids' safety, do not attempt to disturb it yourself without proper containment.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it wearing an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Use a mixture of detergent and water, scrubbing the area. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can irritate airways. Dry the area completely with a fan, but seal off the room from the rest of the house first to prevent spore spread.

However, given the description ("huge patch") and its location behind furniture where moisture has been trapped, this likely indicates a more serious issue like a hidden leak or condensation within the wall. The constant damp smell points to an ongoing moisture source that must be identified and fixed, or the mold will return. The Dubai climate, with year-round AC use, often causes condensation that leads to these problems.

With young children playing on that carpet, professional remediation is strongly advised. A certified company will use containment barriers and HEPA air scrubbers to remove the mold and spores safely, preventing them from circulating throughout your home. They can also identify the root cause to ensure it doesn't recur.
