Black mold in closet causing allergiies: remove myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. I'm really worried because my allergies have been terrible this past month and I'm wondering if it's connected. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I call a professional company or is it something I can handle myself with cleaners from Ace Hardware?

The black, fuzzy growth in your closet is likely mold, and the timing of your allergies is a strong indicator they're connected. This is a common issue in Dubai villas, especially on exterior walls where temperature differences between the air-conditioned interior and the hot outside cause condensation, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive.

For a small, surface-level area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner from Ace can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry afterward. However, the critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In your case, the location on an exterior wall strongly suggests condensation is the culprit, which may require improving insulation or ventilation.

Given that the mold is behind stored items and has likely been growing unnoticed, the visible spots may only be a portion of the actual growth. The fact that it's triggering your allergies also suggests a significant spore presence. For a persistent issue like this, a professional assessment is the most effective long-term solution. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact condensation points within the wall cavity that DIY methods can't detect. A reputable inspector will provide a clear protocol for remediation and can verify the results with post-clean testing to ensure the problem is resolved, not just the visible stain cleaned.
