Best way to handle black mold in my Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a big patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah, and I'm worried the recent humid weather and a possible leak caused it. What's the best way to handle this properly in Dubai—should I call a professional company or is there a specific product I can get from ACE Hardware to treat it myself?

That black patch in your villa closet is a common issue in Dubai, especially on exterior walls during humid periods. The wall is likely colder than the room's air, causing condensation and creating the damp environment mould needs to grow.

For a patch larger than one square meter, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The visible growth is often just the surface manifestation; the mould can penetrate deeper into the building material, and the root cause could be a hidden leak or significant insulation issue. A proper inspection, sometimes involving moisture meters and borescopes, identifies the true source to prevent rapid regrowth.

While consumer mould removers from hardware stores can clean surface stains, they rarely address the underlying moisture problem. Inappropriate DIY methods can also aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination.

A certified remediation company will first contain the area, safely remove the affected materials, use industrial-grade HEPA filtration to clean the air, and treat the area with antimicrobial solutions. Crucially, they will diagnose and advise on fixing the moisture source, which is essential for a permanent solution in our climate. For verifiable results, look for providers who can document their process with before-and-after testing from an accredited lab.
