Safest way to remove bathroom mold for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corners of our master bathroom shower. We're in a villa in Jumeirah and it's been so humid lately. What's the safest way to get rid of this mold without using harsh chemicals around my family?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humidity is a common trigger for nighttime coughing, especially in children. The black spots are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus species, which thrive in the steamy, poorly ventilated environment of a shower.

Start by improving ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If you don't have one, installing a high-capacity fan is a priority. Wiping down wet tiles and shower surfaces with a squeegee immediately after use removes the moisture mold needs to grow.

For safe removal, avoid bleach as it only bleaches the color and releases harsh fumes. Instead, use distilled white vinegar. Spray it undiluted onto the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a brush and rinse. For stubborn spots, a paste of baking soda and water is effective and non-toxic.

Persistent mold, especially if it returns quickly after cleaning or covers a large area (more than one square meter), often indicates a hidden moisture issue within the wall or grout. In villas, a leak behind the tiles is a frequent culprit. In these cases, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and, if necessary, take tape-lift samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which is crucial if the cough persists despite cleaning. This identifies the actual risk level and ensures the remediation method addresses the root cause, not just the visible growth.
