How to permanently remove mold from kids' bedroom window?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Mirdif villa has a persistent damp smell, especially near the window frames. I wiped away some black spots a couple of months ago, but they’ve come back worse after the recent humidity. I’m worried it’s affecting their allergies. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill this mold for good and stop it from returning?

Window frame mold in Mirdif is a common issue driven by the high humidity and temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot, moist outside air. This creates condensation, providing the perfect environment for mold to grow. Simply wiping it away is a temporary fix, as the microscopic spores remain.

For a long-term solution, the root cause—the moisture—must be addressed. Start by thoroughly cleaning the affected area with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, scrubbing away all visible growth. Dry the area completely immediately after. Crucially, inspect the window’s sealant (beading). In many UAE villas, old or cracked sealant is the primary culprit, allowing humid air to seep in and condense. Removing the old sealant and applying a new, high-quality mold-resistant silicone is often the most effective permanent fix.

To prevent recurrence, ensure the room is well-ventilated. Run an exhaust fan if available or open windows when the outside humidity is lower, typically in the early morning or evening. A small dehumidifier in the room can also help maintain a humidity level below 60%, making it difficult for mold to establish itself.

Since the mold has returned worse and is in a child's bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify hidden moisture sources within the wall or frame and perform air quality testing to determine the spore count and species, which is important for allergy management. This scientific approach ensures the problem is solved at its source.
