Black grout in bathroom: DIY clean or professional problem?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the grout between the wall tiles behind our toilet. It's in our smaller bathroom that doesn't have a window, so it gets pretty steamy during showers. Is this something I can clean myself with a product from the supermarket, or is this a sign of a bigger problem that needs a professional?

That black grout is a classic sign of a humid bathroom environment, which is very common in Dubai's climate. You can likely handle this yourself if it's a surface-level issue. Start with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub with a stiff brush, then use a squeegee on tiles after every shower and run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes to reduce moisture.

If the mould reappears within a few weeks, the problem is probably deeper. Persistent mould, especially behind toilets where hidden leaks are common, can indicate moisture within the wall. In such cases, a professional inspection is wise to assess the wall's integrity and identify any concealed water damage that needs addressing.
