Urgent to hire pro for bedroom closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's been humid lately and I'm worried it's been growing there for a while, especially since my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. How urgently do we need to get a professional mold removal company in to deal with this, or is it something we can handle ourselves over the weekend?

The urgency depends on the size and cause. For a patch smaller than one square meter that you've just discovered, immediate DIY removal is possible if you address the humidity source. However, given the location in a closet and your husband's symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly advised to identify any hidden growth inside the wall or under flooring.

In Dubai's climate, this is almost always a humidity issue, often from condensation from an AC duct running through the closet or a lack of air circulation. Simply wiping the visible mold won't stop it from returning. You must find and fix the moisture source.

For DIY, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Isolate the area. Clean hard surfaces with a detergent solution. Discard any porous materials like cardboard boxes or fabrics that were in direct contact. However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or you see discoloration on the wall itself, the material likely needs to be removed and replaced by a remediation company to properly address the root cause.

Given the reported health symptom, the most prudent step is to have a professional inspection. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact source of water intrusion that you cannot see. This ensures the problem is resolved completely, not just cosmetically cleaned.
