How to treat and prevent mold in AC closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. The AC vent is right above it and it feels damp. What's the best way to treat this existing mold and, more importantly, how can I stop the condensation from happening again to prevent it from coming back?

The dampness from your AC vent is likely causing that mold. First, address the existing growth safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For a small patch, scrub with a mixture of white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water), but never mix chemicals. Dry the area thoroughly immediately after. However, if the mold covers more than a square meter or has a strong musty odor, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent and type of mold, as improper cleaning can aerosolize spores.

The real solution is stopping the condensation. This is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The most likely cause is that the cold air from the supply vent is hitting the warmer ambient air in the closet, causing moisture to condense on the walls. Ensure the closet door is left ajar to allow for proper air circulation and temperature equalization. Check that the AC drain line is not clogged and is properly discharging condensate away from the structure.

For a permanent fix, have an HVAC technician assess the vent. They may need to adjust the airflow, insulate the ductwork or the cold water pipes running inside the wall, or install a smaller vent cover to reduce the volume of cold air dumping directly into that enclosed space. Controlling indoor humidity with a dedicated dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce condensation throughout the home.
