How to permanently remove mold from bedroom and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. What's the best way to completely remove this ourselves and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

Mold behind furniture in Dubai villas is extremely common due to our high humidity levels, especially in older buildings or rooms with poor airflow. For a small area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt removal yourself, but the root cause must be addressed or it will return.

Start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle; this is often more effective than bleach on porous surfaces like drywall. Lightly mist the moldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne. Scrub with a stiff-bristled brush, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection during this process. Discard any cleaning materials used.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the moisture. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. Identify if the wall feels damp; this could indicate a hidden condensation issue from the AC unit's cold surface or a minor leak. Use a dehumidifier or run your AC's dry mode consistently to keep indoor humidity below 60%. Wiping down cold surfaces where condensation forms can also help.

Given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, this is a sign the issue may be more widespread. Mold behind a wardrobe is often just the visible tip of a larger problem. For health-related cases, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the wall cavity for hidden growth and to identify the precise moisture source. They can also perform air quality testing to see if spore counts in the room are elevated. DIY cleaning addresses the surface but often misses the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth in our climate.
