Can I clean my moldy AC filter with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m starting to suspect the AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. I pulled the filter out yesterday and the edges of the plastic housing look dark and fuzzy. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray, or do I absolutely need to call a professional for a proper mold inspection?

Cleaning a visibly moldy AC filter with bleach is not recommended. Bleach fumes can circulate through your AC system and irritate lungs, potentially worsening respiratory issues like the coughing you've observed. It also doesn't address mold growing deep inside the unit or the ductwork, which is common in Dubai's humid climate where condensation constantly feeds growth.

For a surface issue confined to a replaceable filter, you can vacuum it with a HEPA-filtered vacuum outdoors and then replace it. However, since you see mold on the plastic housing, the contamination is already beyond the filter. This indicates a deeper problem inside the unit itself.

Given your children's symptoms and the visible growth in a bedroom unit, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use cameras to see inside the coil and ducts to assess the full extent. In many Jumeirah villas, the insulation lining the ducts can trap moisture and harbour mould unseen. Proper remediation requires specialized equipment to contain and remove the growth safely, followed by lab testing to verify the environment is measurably improved.
