Can I clean mold in AC duct myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Barsha has been making the whole downstairs smell damp and my husband's allergies have been awful this winter. I pulled the vent cover off and the inside of the duct looks like it has black and green fuzzy patches. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach solution or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company?

Black and green fuzzy patches inside ducts require professional assessment. In Dubai's humid climate, visible mold growth in AC systems often indicates deeper contamination within the unit or ductwork that bleach surface cleaning cannot address. The damp smell and allergy symptoms confirm active spores are circulating.

DIY cleaning with bleach is ineffective and potentially hazardous. Bleach cannot penetrate porous insulation liners common in UAE villas, and its high water content can feed further mold growth. Disturbing colonies without proper containment will aerosolize spores throughout your living space, worsening allergy exposure.

Professional inspection is necessary to identify the moisture source—often condensation from poorly insulated ducts, a drain pan overflow, or a leak. They use borescopes to inspect deep within the system and should perform air and surface sampling to identify the species. This is critical, as some molds like Aspergillus are common here and pose higher health risks.

For a villa in Al Barsha with whole-level odor and health impacts, a full system assessment is the only safe approach. Reputable companies will provide a detailed report with lab results from a certified microbiology lab, which is required for any remediation plan.
