How to remove black mold and fix the damp root cause?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. The wall feels cold and damp to the touch, and I'm worried it's because of a hidden leak or just the high humidity. What's the best way to not only remove this mold but also find and fix the root cause so it doesn't just come back?

First, address the moisture source immediately. A cold, damp wall behind furniture in Dubai is classic condensation from poor airflow or a hidden leak from AC drain lines or plumbing. The high humidity here, especially with year-round AC use, creates perfect conditions for this.

For removal, small surface mold (under 1 sqm) can be cleaned with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted detergent or white vinegar. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Never bleach it, as that only removes the colour and can worsen indoor air quality.

However, with children coughing and the wall feeling damp, this is likely a serious case requiring professional assessment. The mold you see is often just the fruiting body; the root system can be deep within the gypsum board. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact water source—be it a leak, capillary rise, or severe condensation.

Remediation isn't just cleaning; it's controlling the environment. For a recurring issue, the wall may need to be opened, the cavity dried, and insulation improved to prevent the cold surface. Fixing the root cause is mandatory under Dubai Municipality guidelines for healthy indoor environments. After remediation, a post-testing lab analysis is the only way to verify the spore count has returned to safe levels and the root cause is resolved.
