How to remove black mold from damp bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and it feels a bit damp to the touch. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Black mold on an exterior wall in Dubai is a common issue due to the high humidity and temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot outside air, which causes condensation. Since the wall feels damp, the first step is to address the moisture source. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself with proper precautions.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet doors and consider sealing the gap under the door with a towel. Scrub the affected area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid using bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces. After cleaning, dry the wall completely with a fan. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes that show mold growth.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated deep into the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, the dampness may be a more serious issue like a hidden plumbing leak or insufficient exterior wall insulation. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify and rectify the root cause to prevent recurrence. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide definitive identification of the mold species and verify the effectiveness of the remediation through post-cleanup testing.
