Could?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out a bag of winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of my sweaters covered in black and green fuzzy spots. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and the room always feels a bit damp. Could this mold be the reason for their coughs, and who should I call to properly test for it?

The most common pest control challenges in Dubai and the UAE stem from the region's hot, arid climate, which favors certain resilient pests while also driving them indoors in search of cooler temperatures and water sources. Key challenges include:

1. Cockroach Infestations: German and American cockroaches thrive in urban environments, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and drainage systems. They are vectors for pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli.

2. Bed Bugs: These pests are frequently introduced via travel and luggage. They spread rapidly in multi-unit residences and hotels, causing significant discomfort and potential allergic reactions.

3. Termites: Subterranean termites pose a substantial threat to structural integrity, especially in older buildings and those with garden areas. They often go undetected until significant damage has occurred.

4. Ants: Pharaoh ants and carpenter ants are common invaders. Pharaoh ants contaminate food and can spread pathogens in hospitals, while carpenter ants damage wooden structures.

5. Rodents: Mice and rats seek refuge indoors during the hotter months, contaminating food supplies and gnawing through wiring, which poses fire risks.

6. Mosquitoes: Stagnant water in AC drip trays, plant saucers, and blocked drains provides breeding grounds. Mosquitoes are vectors for diseases like dengue and West Nile virus.

7. Flies: House flies and fruit flies proliferate near waste and food sources, spreading bacteria and contaminating surfaces.

Effective Strategies:
• Exclusion: Seal gaps around pipes, windows, and doors. Install screens and door sweeps.
• Sanitation: Regularly dispose of garbage, clean drains, and avoid leaving food exposed. Fix leaks promptly to eliminate water sources.
• Monitoring: Use sticky traps and pheromone monitors for early detection of pests like cockroaches and bed bugs.
• Professional Treatments: Regular pest control contracts are advisable for multi-unit buildings and commercial properties. Treatments often include residual insecticides, baits, and insect growth regulators (IGRs).
• Public Awareness: Educate residents and staff on preventive measures, such as proper food storage and prompt reporting of sightings.

Regulatory Note: Always use pest control products that are approved by the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), and ensure applicators are licensed.

For severe or persistent infestations, engaging a professional pest control service is recommended, as DIY methods often provide only temporary relief and may not address hidden colonies or breeding sites.
