Should we handle black mold ourselves or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It must have been growing slowly because the AC unit is right on the other side of that wall and it's always damp. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I'm worried about it spreading and making us sick. Should we call a professional mold remediation company or is this something we can safely handle ourselves?

The size and location matter. A small patch under 1 square foot on a non-porous surface like tile can sometimes be managed with careful DIY. However, black mold behind an AC wall in a humid Dubai closet is a high-risk scenario. The visible patch is likely just the surface manifestation; the moisture source is the AC condensation, meaning the growth could be extensive inside the wall cavity.
Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface color without addressing the root structure. More importantly, aggressive scrubbing can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading contamination throughout your apartment and HVAC system. Professional assessment is strongly advised here. Dubai’s high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold to recur if the moisture issue isn't solved. A proper inspection will use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall’s interior. Remediation involves containing the area, HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to capture spores, and safely removing affected porous materials. The goal is to identify and rectify the AC condensation leak or insulation issue causing the dampness. Without fixing that, the mold will return. For a situation involving an AC unit and potential hidden growth, the risk of inadequate handling outweighs the DIY approach. |
