How to permanently remove mold and protect health?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner of our bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It’s been worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I be worried about my family's health from breathing this in?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely mold, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the microclimate created by placing furniture against an exterior wall. This setup traps moisture and reduces airflow, creating an ideal environment for growth.

For health, most common household molds in this context cause irritation—congestion, sneezing, or worsened allergies—particularly for children or those with asthma. The risk level depends on the species, which can only be identified through lab analysis.

To remove it permanently, address the moisture source first. Move the wardrobe away from the wall. The mold is likely feeding on condensation formed where the cool AC-chilled interior wall meets the humid outdoor air. Wipe the affected area with a diluted vinegar or detergent solution, but never mix chemicals. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid spore inhalation.

However, cleaning only addresses visible growth. For a permanent solution, the underlying humidity and condensation issue must be resolved. This often requires improving room ventilation, ensuring your AC is not set too cold, and potentially using a dehumidifier. For recurring or widespread mold (>1 square meter), a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact species and the precise moisture pathway, as per Dubai Municipality guidelines. They can perform a moisture mapping assessment to find the root cause beyond the obvious condensation.
