How to clean and prevent AC mold for toddler safety?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit, and now I'm seeing small black spots forming around the vent on the wall. It's been getting worse since the humidity started rising a few weeks ago. I'm really worried about my toddler breathing that in. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

The black spots are likely mold, and your concern for your toddler is valid. In Dubai's high humidity, AC condensation leaks create the perfect damp environment for mold growth, which can irritate a child's developing respiratory system.
For a small, visible patch, you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to three parts water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area gently, let the vinegar solution sit for an hour to disinfect, then wipe it dry. Do not use bleach, as it can release harmful fumes and only removes the surface colour, not the root structure. However, cleaning the wall is only a temporary fix. The primary source is inside the AC unit or the ductwork where moisture is accumulating. The entire system needs to be inspected to find and repair the leak. Until that internal moisture issue is resolved, the mold will return. For a child's room, the most effective strategy is a professional inspection and remediation. They will identify the leak's source, clean the internal evaporator coils and drain pan—which are the true breeding grounds—and ensure the drainage line is clear. This addresses the root cause. To prevent recurrence, maintain your AC unit with regular servicing, keep the room well-ventilated when possible, and consider using a dehumidifier to combat the ambient humidity, especially during the summer months. |
