How to remove mold from curtains and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing on the back of our bedroom curtains in our Jumeirah apartment. It’s been so humid lately that even with the AC running, I noticed these black spots when I opened the windows this morning. What is the most effective way to clean this off the fabric and what can I do to stop it from coming back?

Mold on curtains is common in Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months when condensation forms on cold surfaces near AC vents. For washable fabric, take them outside to avoid spreading spores indoors. Pre-treat with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, then wash in hot water with detergent. Sun-drying is effective for disinfection. For dry-clean only curtains, professional cleaning is necessary as home methods may damage the fabric.

Preventing recurrence requires addressing the humidity source. Ensure your AC is set to maintain indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 45-55%. Check that no AC vents are blowing directly onto the curtains, as this creates a cold surface where moisture condenses. Improve air circulation in the room by keeping furniture away from walls and using a dehumidifier if necessary, particularly during more humid periods.

If the mold growth is extensive or the coughing persists after cleaning, the curtain mold might be a symptom of a larger issue. In many Jumeirah apartments, the underlying cause is often condensation on the wall behind the curtain due to temperature differences or a slightly leaking AC unit drip pan. A professional inspection can identify these hidden moisture sources, which is the only way to achieve a long-term solution. For health-related concerns, consulting a physician is always recommended.
