Can I fix black shower mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and it’s spreading to the ceiling corner. It’s been getting worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach spray, it comes back within a week. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional cleaner to handle it properly?

Black grout and ceiling corners in showers are almost always a mold issue, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but does not kill the root structure penetrating porous materials like grout and drywall.

For a small, surface-level area, a dedicated mold-removing product from a hardware store can be effective. Look for an EPA-approved fungicide, not just bleach. However, if the discoloration returns quickly or you see it on the ceiling, the issue is likely deeper. Scrubbing can aerosolize spores, spreading the problem.

Professional assessment is recommended when the mold is recurring, visible on non-tile surfaces like drywall ceilings, or if occupants experience respiratory irritation. Pros use containment procedures and antimicrobial treatments to address the root cause. In many cases, the underlying issue is insufficient bathroom ventilation; the room's extractor fan should run for at least 30 minutes after each shower to reduce condensation.
