Should I worry about green spots on my balcony ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we had last month, I noticed some greenish spots on the ceiling of my balcony. It’s not a huge area, maybe about 1 square meter, but it’s worrying me because it smells musty every time it gets damp outside. Can anyone advise if this is something I can handle myself or if I should call in a professional?

Absolutely, green spots on your balcony ceiling require attention. These greenish areas could be indicative of mold growth which is definitely a concern given the recent heavy rains in your area. Mold thrives in damp environments and can pose health risks if not properly addressed.

Firstly, it's important to understand that while minor cases might seem manageable, professional inspection is recommended for accuracy and peace of mind, especially when dealing with moisture-related issues in the UAE such as yours. Here in Dubai, we often see higher humidity levels post-rainfall which can create ideal conditions for mold to develop.

In your case, given the size and the musty smell, it would be wise to call in a professional for an assessment. The early signs of mold are crucial to identify before they spread or worsen. You may consider contacting Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com for expert guidance.

If you decide to manage this on your own, start by assessing the extent of the damage and identifying any potential sources of moisture. Check if there are leaks from pipes, poor drainage, or inadequate ventilation in the area. Addressing these issues can prevent further mold growth. Use a damp cloth or sponge to gently clean the affected area with a solution of water and detergent. Ensure thorough drying afterward.

To prevent future occurrences, focus on improving air circulation by opening windows when weather permits and using exhaust fans if necessary. Regularly inspect areas prone to moisture like balconies, bathrooms, and kitchens. If you notice any new signs of moisture or mold, act promptly to address the issue before it worsens.

Remember, while DIY solutions can be effective for minor cases, professional help is essential in ensuring a thorough resolution that complies with local regulations and maintains your home’s health.
