Is this black mold causing my kids' symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches ever since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago. I’ve just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the base of the wall behind our sofa in the living room, which is right under the AC vent. Is this a dangerous type of mold and could it be causing their symptoms?

It very likely could be. The black spots behind your sofa are a major red flag, especially given the timing with Dubai's recent humidity spike and your children's symptoms. Constant coughing and headaches are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly in children who are more sensitive. The location directly under the AC vent is critical; it suggests the AC unit itself may be a source of moisture and mold, blowing spores directly into the room.

While the term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins, many other common black-colored molds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus can also cause these significant respiratory issues. You cannot identify the species or its potential health risks by sight alone.

In Dubai's climate, this is a frequent issue. AC systems create condensation, and when combined with high ambient humidity, they create perfect conditions for mold growth inside units and ductwork. The wall discoloration is just the visible sign; the main colony could be hidden within the AC system or the wall cavity itself.

You need a professional inspection. A proper assessment involves using a moisture meter to find the water source and air or surface sampling to identify the mold species through lab analysis. This is the only way to know what you're dealing with and to plan an effective remediation. For your children's health, do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores into the air. A certified inspector can provide a protocol to safely remove the mold and address the underlying moisture problem to prevent it from returning.
