Safely removing bathroom mold with kids at home?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold in the corner of our master bathroom where the shower is. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and I’m worried the humidity is making it worse, especially after the recent foggy mornings. What’s the safest way to remove this myself without exposing my family to more spores?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's climate is extremely common due to high humidity and condensation from daily showers. For a small patch you've spotted, you can clean it safely yourself. First, ensure the room is well-ventilated; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and keep the door closed to contain spores.
Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Avoid bleach, as it mostly bleaches the mold and can release fumes in a confined space. Instead, use a dedicated mold remover spray or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Apply, let it sit for an hour to kill the growth, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe the area dry with a disposable cloth. The key is addressing the moisture source. After cleaning, regularly wipe down wet surfaces and improve air circulation. For an older building in Bur Dubai, the grout may be compromised, allowing moisture into the wall. If the mold returns quickly, covers a large area (more than one square meter), or is inside the wall, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and recommend repairs. Persistent coughing in children, especially if it improves when they leave the home, is a strong indicator that professional assessment and lab testing to identify the spore types would be a prudent next step. |
