How to remove black mold from bedroom and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. What's the best way to completely remove this ourselves to make sure it doesn't come back, and should I call a professional company for an inspection?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai bedrooms due to high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt removal yourself. Start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Do not use bleach, as it only removes surface color and does not address the root moisture problem.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Spray the solution onto the moldy area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe the area clean with damp cloths and dispose of all cleaning materials in a sealed bag. Use a dehumidifier or run your AC continuously on dry mode to keep the room's humidity below 50%, which is critical to prevent regrowth.

However, since your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms and the mold is behind a large fixture, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible growth is often just the surface portion; the underlying infestation within the wall or behind the skirting board can be much larger. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent and can take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the specific species, which informs the correct remediation protocol. For health-related cases, this diagnostic step is prudent before any major DIY removal is undertaken.
