Is dampness and AC causing my symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a persistent dampness in my bedroom closet, and now my throat feels irritated and I’ve got a bit of a cough. The AC in the apartment seems to be working overtime to try and keep up with all the humidity, but it doesn’t seem to help much. Could this be related? What should I do about it? Question: Is there a chance the dampness and mustiness are causing my symptoms, or could it just be allergies getting worse because of the AC?

Certainly, the symptoms you're experiencing could be linked to both the dampness and the air conditioning system. The persistent dampness in your bedroom closet is a clear indicator of moisture accumulation, which can lead to an increase in mold spores, bacteria, and other microorganisms thriving within the environment.

In Dubai/UAE, the climate can indeed create conditions conducive for mold growth, especially after rainfall or during the cooler months when humidity levels are higher. The AC unit trying harder might indicate it's working overtime to manage excess moisture from the atmosphere, but this alone may not be sufficient to maintain a healthy indoor environment without addressing the underlying cause of dampness.

Mold and other microorganisms can release spores into the air which, when inhaled, can irritate your respiratory system leading to symptoms such as throat irritation, coughing, and possibly even exacerbating existing allergies. It's important to note that in Dubai, as per UAE regulations, it is mandatory to ensure indoor environmental quality meets certain standards for health and safety.

To address the issue effectively, I recommend a professional inspection by Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or hello@saniservice.com. They can assess whether dampness issues are indeed causing your symptoms and provide remediation services if necessary. Additionally, consider having the AC system checked to ensure it is functioning optimally and might need maintenance or upgrades.

In the meantime, you could try increasing air circulation in the affected areas using fans or opening windows (weather permitting) during the day when outside humidity is lower. Using dehumidifiers can also help reduce moisture levels indoors. Regular cleaning of your AC filters and ensuring proper drainage around the unit will contribute to better indoor air quality.

Remember, prevention and timely action are key to maintaining a healthy living environment in Dubai's climate conditions.
