Is mold from ceiling affecting my kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rainfall last month, I noticed a musty smell and some dark spots starting to appear on the ceiling of my bedroom. My kids have also been complaining about constant coughing which I suspect might be due to mold. The AC in the apartment seems to cycle on and off more frequently than usual too. How can I prevent this from happening or recurring?

The issue you're describing does indeed sound concerning. Mold can grow rapidly under humid conditions and is known for causing respiratory issues which might explain the coughing your kids are experiencing. In Dubai, as per the UAE Environmental Health Regulations, maintaining a clean and mold-free environment within residential spaces is crucial.

The first step should be to conduct a professional inspection. Given the recent rainfall and the presence of musty odours and dark spots on your ceiling, it's highly recommended that you contact a certified environmental remediation company like Saniservice for a thorough evaluation. They can assess whether the mold growth has exceeded permissible levels and suggest appropriate measures.

While waiting for their visit, take these precautions:
• Ensure good ventilation by opening windows if possible, especially after rainfall.
• Use dehumidifiers to reduce moisture in your bedroom; maintaining relative humidity below 60% is advisable.
• Clean areas around water sources like taps or where pipes are visible using a solution of one cup bleach per gallon of water.

For the AC system, regular servicing and maintenance are essential. If it’s cycling on and off frequently, consider having an HVAC expert from a trusted provider such as Trane or Daikin inspect it to rule out any moisture-related issues that could be contributing to mold growth elsewhere in your home.

Lastly, keep surfaces dry and clean, using non-toxic cleaning agents when necessary. Natural remedies like baking soda can help absorb moisture but should not replace professional treatment.

Remember, prevention is key. Implementing a robust maintenance schedule for both your living environment and HVAC systems will significantly reduce the risk of mold recurrence. Should you need immediate assistance or advice, do not hesitate to call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.

Stay vigilant and proactive about indoor air quality.
