AC causing cough and itchy eyes for toddler and me?« Back to Previous Page
|
My toddler and I have both had a persistent dry cough and itchy eyes for the last month, ever since we started using our AC full-time in our Jumeirah Park villa. It seems to clear up a bit when we spend the day at my sister's place in a newer building. Could the AC unit be blowing mold or dust around, or is this just a common Dubai thing we have to get used to?

Based on your description, this is a classic presentation of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), and it is absolutely not something you just have to "get used to" in Dubai. The fact that your symptoms subside when you're elsewhere is a huge indicator that the source is within your villa's environment.
Your hypothesis is very likely correct. AC units, especially when not meticulously maintained, are prime breeding grounds for microbial contaminants like mold, bacteria, and accumulated dust mites. When you switched to full-time use, the system began circulating these allergens and irritants throughout your living space. Toddlers are particularly susceptible due to their developing respiratory systems. The UAE's hot, humid climate forces AC systems to work constantly, creating massive condensation. If the drain pans, cooling coils, or ductwork are not clean and functioning perfectly, this moisture leads to mold growth. Dust buildup is also a major issue due to frequent sand and dust storms. While common, it's a serious health concern. UAE regulations, such as the Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety Department guidelines, mandate that AC systems be maintained to prevent such health hazards. You absolutely need a professional indoor air quality (IAQ) inspection. A certified technician will conduct tests, including surface and air sampling for mold spores, to identify the specific contaminants and their source within your HVAC system. DIY cleaning often just disperses the problem. Do not delay, especially with a toddler involved.
