Black mold in closet: DIY or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and it’s been extra humid lately. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should we immediately call the building management?

Based on your description, this situation warrants a professional inspection before any DIY attempts. The black spots spreading in an exterior wall closet, combined with recent high humidity, strongly suggest a mold colony. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity meets year-round air conditioning, condensation within wall cavities is a common failure point, creating the perfect environment for mold.

Attempting to clean it yourself is highly inadvisable. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to your winter clothes and other areas of the bedroom, potentially causing health issues. The root cause is likely a breach in the building's vapor barrier or a leak from the external wall, which requires diagnostic equipment to identify.

Your first step should be to notify your building management or landlord in writing, as they are typically responsible for the structural integrity of the exterior walls under UAE tenancy laws. However, for an accurate assessment of the contamination's extent and the source of moisture, an independent professional inspection is crucial.

We recommend contacting a certified mold inspection company like Saniservice. Our experts use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact moisture source and assess the spread non-invasively. This evidence-based report is essential for holding the building management accountable and ensuring the remediation is done correctly. For immediate advice and to schedule an inspection, please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Do not disturb the area until it has been professionally evaluated.
