Can I clean black shower mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom’s grout in the shower corner has been turning black for a few months, and the musty smell is getting stronger, especially after a hot day. I live in a studio in JLT and the bathroom doesn't have a window. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar spray from Lulu, or is it time to call a professional cleaning service?

It depends on the mold's extent. Surface-level black spots on grout are often manageable with a DIY approach. For a windowless bathroom in JLT's humid climate, the persistent musty smell suggests a deeper moisture issue that may require professional assessment.

Start with a strong vinegar solution (undiluted) or a dedicated grout cleaner. Scrub thoroughly with a stiff brush. The key is ventilation—run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least an hour after every shower and leave the door open to allow moisture to escape. If the mold reappears within a few weeks or the smell persists, the growth is likely behind the tiles or in the wall.

In many Dubai buildings, the constant AC use creates significant condensation within wall cavities, especially in windowless bathrooms. This hidden moisture feeds mold that surface cleaning cannot address. Professional remediation involves moisture meters to locate the source and methods to dry the structure, preventing recurrence. A lab test can also identify the mold type, which is crucial if occupants experience allergy symptoms.
