Should I clean black mold behind wardrobe immediately?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Mirdif villa. It's been so humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading. Is this something I need to get professionally cleaned immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Black mold growth behind furniture is a common issue in Dubai's climate, especially during humid periods. For a suspected case involving children's health, immediate action is recommended. The persistent coughing is a significant indicator that the spores are likely airborne and affecting indoor air quality.

While you can clean a very small patch (under one square foot) yourself with a bleach solution, the location behind a wardrobe suggests a larger problem. Moving the furniture will disturb the colony, releasing a large number of spores into the room. For a situation of this size and with health symptoms present, professional assessment is advised. They will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores during cleaning, and identify the moisture source—often condensation from an exterior wall or a hidden leak.

The high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold behind large furniture where air circulation is poor. It is not advisable to wait, as the colony will continue to grow and release spores over the coming days. A proper remediation will include addressing the moisture issue to prevent rapid regrowth, which a simple surface wipe will not accomplish.
