DIY mold removal or professional help for Jumeirah Park villa?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room of our Jumeirah Park villa has these black fuzzy patches that have been slowly growing since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just came back worse, and now the whole area smells damp. Is this something I can handle myself with a product from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company, and what would that kind of service roughly cost?

The black patches and damp smell indicate a persistent mold issue, likely from condensation or a hidden leak common in Dubai's humid climate. Vinegar often fails as it doesn't address the moisture source or penetrate porous materials like drywall, and can even stimulate some mold types to regrow more aggressively.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach using a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store, not a general disinfectant, can be attempted. However, given the description of it growing back worse and the associated damp smell, this suggests a larger underlying problem. The wall cavity may be affected, which you cannot access or properly dry yourself. In villas, this is often due to condensation from AC ducts inside the wall or a small plumbing leak.

Professional remediation is strongly recommended here. The process involves identifying and eliminating the moisture source with specialized tools, containing the area to prevent spore spread, safely removing contaminated materials, and HEPA vacuuming. The final step should always be post-remediation verification (PRV) testing by an independent lab to confirm the spore count has returned to normal indoor levels—this is the only way to verify the cleanup was successful.

Costs are not fixed and depend entirely on the extent of the contamination found behind the wall. A proper inspection will define the scope and provide a accurate quotation. For a situation like this, the investment is justified to protect the property's structure and your family's health, as chronic exposure to mold spores can exacerbate allergies and respiratory issues.
