How do I clean mold and prevent its return?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I've spotted black fuzzy patches on the back wall and on some of my shoes. I got the leak fixed last week, but I'm worried the mold will just come back in this humidity. What's the best way to clean this and what can I do to keep it from spreading or coming back?

First, address the moisture source, which you've done by fixing the leak. That's the most critical step.
For cleaning small, localized mold on a hard surface like a wall, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part detergent to ten parts water, scrub the area, then wipe it down and allow it to dry completely. For porous items like shoes, a thorough cleaning with a specialized solution is needed, but they may be difficult to salvage if the mold growth is extensive. Given the location inside an AC closet, the mold is likely more widespread inside the unit and the ducting, which you cannot see or properly clean yourself. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer months, creates a perfect environment for mold to regrow quickly if any spores or moisture remain. A superficial cleaning will not address this. To prevent it from returning, you must ensure the area is completely dry. Use a dehumidifier or a fan in the closet for 24-48 hours after cleaning. However, the most effective long-term solution involves a professional assessment. They can use moisture meters to confirm the wall is dry deep inside and inspect the AC evaporator coil and drip pan, which are common, hidden sources of mold that cause continuous spore distribution. For verifiable results, a company with its own microbiology lab can take air and surface samples before and after remediation to confirm the spore count has been measurably reduced to safe levels, ensuring the problem is truly resolved and not just hidden. |
