Is black mold causing my illness and can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been so humid lately and I've been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat every morning for the past few weeks. Could this mold be the reason I'm feeling so unwell, and is it safe for me to try and clean it myself or should I get a professional?

Black mold in your closet, especially in Dubai's high humidity, is a likely cause of your morning congestion and sore throat. The confined space and organic materials like cotton or wool in winter clothes create an ideal environment for mold to grow and release spores you're breathing in all night.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can worsen indoor air quality. The key is not just cleaning but fixing the moisture source. In a closet, this is often condensation from an exterior wall or lack of air circulation.

Given your symptoms and the fact the mold has returned, a professional assessment is wise. They can identify the exact moisture source—which could be a hidden leak or a more significant condensation issue—and ensure the mold is thoroughly addressed. In many Dubai villas, the root cause is a breach in the building envelope or an AC unit not properly dehumidifying. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping and often air or surface sampling to identify the mold type and spore concentration, which guides the correct remediation protocol.
