Is this black mold dangerous for my sick twins?« Back to Previous Page

Our twins have been having a really bad runny nose and cough for the past couple of weeks that just won't go away. I was cleaning behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is against an outer wall in our Jumeirah villa, and found a large patch of black, fuzzy-looking mold. It’s been so humid lately that I'm worried it's spreading. Is this the dangerous kind of black mold and what’s the safest way to get rid of it with young kids in the house?

The black mold you found is a legitimate concern, especially with your twins' persistent symptoms. In Dubai's high humidity, this type of growth on an outer wall is often due to condensation from air conditioning, creating a perfect environment for mold. Many types of mold appear black, and while the infamous Stachybotrys is less common, other species like Aspergillus or Cladosporium are frequently identified here and are known to cause the exact respiratory irritation, runny noses, and coughs you're describing.

The safest approach with young children present is to first identify the species to understand the risk level, which requires professional surface sampling and a lab culture. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other chemicals, as this can aerosolize the spores and significantly worsen indoor air quality, potentially aggravating your children's health. For a confirmed infestation, remediation should be handled by a certified professional who will set up containment barriers, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safely remove the contaminated materials.

To prevent recurrence, the underlying moisture issue must be fixed. This typically involves inspecting the wall for leaks, improving ventilation around the wardrobe, and possibly treating the area with anti-microbial solutions after removal. Managing your home's humidity with properly serviced AC units and dehumidifiers is critical in our climate. Given the children's health, an inspection to assess the extent is the most prudent first step.
