Can I treat black shower mold myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It's our only bathroom and it's been so humid lately that the smell is getting really strong. How urgent is it to get this treated professionally, or can I handle it myself with a spray from the supermarket?

Small black spots on shower grout are common in Dubai's humidity, but a strong smell indicates it may be deeper than surface level.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can try a dedicated bathroom mold remover spray. Wear gloves, ensure good ventilation, and scrub the grout thoroughly. If the mold disappears and doesn't return within a few weeks, you've likely managed it.

However, the combination of its spreading nature and the strong, persistent musty odor suggests the mold may have penetrated behind the tiles or into the grout. In Dubai's climate, where air conditioning runs constantly, this hidden mold can release spores into your home's airflow. DIY cleaning often just bleaches the visible surface, leaving the root colony intact to regrow.

For persistent, smelly, or widespread mold, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters to find the source of the water intrusion—often failing sealant or cracked grout—and determine if the wall cavity is affected. Remediation involves fixing the moisture source, proper removal, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent rapid regrowth. Verifiable before-and-after testing is the only way to confirm it's truly resolved.
