Safest DIY black mold removal method for family health?« Back to Previous Page

Our two-year-old has been having a persistent cough for the last month, and we finally found the cause: a patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. It must have been growing there since that period of high humidity we had a while back. What’s the safest and most effective way to remove it ourselves without putting my family’s health at further risk?

DIY removal is only safe for small, contained patches (under 1 square meter) and if no one has severe respiratory conditions. For a child's persistent cough, the safest first step is to isolate the area from the family until it's resolved.

Start by mixing a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part white vinegar in a spray bottle. Avoid bleach; it only removes surface discoloration and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves during the entire process.

Before spraying, lightly mist the mold with water to prevent spores from becoming airborne. Then, apply your vinegar solution and let it sit for an hour. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, wipe all residues away with damp cloths, and dry the surface completely with a fan. Dispose of all cleaning cloths and sealing materials in a tied plastic bag.

Crucially, the root cause is Dubai's high humidity, often worsened by year-round AC use creating cold surfaces where condensation forms. Simply cleaning without fixing the moisture source means it will return. Identify and repair any leaks, improve ventilation behind the wardrobe, and consider a dehumidifier for that room.

Given the child's health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to check for hidden mold inside walls or AC systems that you cannot see. A certified company can perform air quality tests to confirm the environment is safe again.
