Should I remove closet mold myself or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to have gotten worse. What's the best way to get rid of this safely, and should I be calling my landlord or a professional cleaning service first?

For a small patch (under 1 square meter), you can often handle it yourself safely. However, given its location on an exterior wall, this likely indicates a condensation or moisture intrusion issue that will recur unless the root cause is fixed.

Start by mixing a solution of white vinegar and water or a mild detergent. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and dispose of any cloths used. This addresses the visible growth but not the underlying dampness.

You should absolutely notify your landlord in writing. Under typical Dubai rental regulations, structural issues like potential water ingress from an external wall are the landlord's responsibility to investigate and repair. They may need to check the building's external sealant or insulation to prevent recurring condensation from our high humidity and constant AC temperature swings.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is warranted. They can use moisture meters to find the hidden damp source and recommend targeted repairs. For health safety, especially with stored fabrics, a lab test can identify the mold type, which informs the necessary remediation scope.
