How to treat damp black mold behind bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind the wardrobe in my master bedroom in Jumeirah has started showing these black speckles, and it feels damp to the touch. I think the recent humidity made it worse, but I’m worried it’s coming from inside the wall. What’s the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading before it gets completely out of hand?

Damp black mould behind a wardrobe in Jumeirah is a common issue due to our high humidity and the microclimate created when furniture is flush against an exterior wall. The dampness suggests a condensation problem or a potential hidden leak.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. The wall must dry completely before any treatment. Identify the moisture source: is it condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the warm wall, or is there a leak from a pipe or a crack in the building envelope? Wipe away visible mould with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves for protection. Do not simply paint over it.

For a recurrence or if the wall remains damp, the mould is likely growing within the wall cavity. In Dubai’s climate, this internal growth is a frequent and serious concern that DIY methods cannot address. Spores will continue to release into your bedroom air. The only effective solution is a professional inspection to diagnose the exact moisture source and extent of contamination. A science-driven inspection uses moisture meters and, if necessary, lab analysis to identify the mould species and create a targeted remediation plan, which is crucial for a master bedroom.
