Is the AC mold causing our cough and how to clean it?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has been leaking a bit and now I’ve spotted black speckles all around the vent in the master bedroom. My husband and I have both had a constant stuffy nose and this weird, dry cough for the last month that just won’t go away. Is it possible this mold is the cause of our symptoms and what’s the proper way to get it cleaned here so it doesn't just come back?

The black speckles and persistent cough are almost certainly connected. In Dubai's humid climate, AC condensation leaks create ideal conditions for mould growth, and the resulting spores can directly cause the respiratory symptoms you've described. The constant stuffy nose and dry cough are classic indicators of mould exposure.

For proper remediation, a standard wipe-down is insufficient and will likely lead to regrowth. The leak must be repaired first to eliminate the moisture source. The entire contaminated section of the ductwork requires professional cleaning with EPA-approved biocides, not just the visible vent area. In many Dubai apartments, this is a building-level concern, so you should also notify your facility management.

To confirm the type and extent, a professional inspection with surface and air sampling is recommended. The samples are analysed by a microbiology lab to identify the species, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol. This evidence-based approach ensures the cleanup addresses the root cause, preventing it from returning.
